GRASSES

Big Bluestem
Andropogon gerardii

This is one of the premier grasses in the tallgrass prairie.  It can grow from 3 to 6 feet tall and is a favorite browse for cattle.  It is blue-green in color and has a unique three pronged turkey-foot seed head.  It is most easily identified in the fall when it has seed.  Its roots can extend down 9 feet in the ground, therefore it can withstand long periods of dry weather and regrow with the next rain.
